A quick guide

Use the number with context

The answer is only useful when you know what it includes and what it leaves out.

How to use it

  1. Choose the question you want to answer.
  2. Enter the base and the required comparison or percentage value.
  3. Calculate to see the substituted formula and result.

Formula

Percentage of = base × percentage ÷ 100; change = (new − base) ÷ base × 100

A percentage is meaningful only when the base and units are clear.

Make it concrete

Worked example

20% of ₹1,000 is ₹200. A move from ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 is a 20% increase.
