A quick guide

Use the number with context

The answer is only useful when you know what it includes and what it leaves out.

How to use it

  1. Enter fixed costs using the same period and unit as the other inputs.
  2. Enter selling price per unit using the same period and unit as the other inputs.
  3. Enter variable cost per unit using the same period and unit as the other inputs.

Formula

Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (selling price per unit − variable cost per unit)

The whole-unit result is the minimum complete units needed to cover the selected fixed costs.

Make it concrete

Worked example

₹1,00,000 fixed costs and ₹400 contribution per unit require 250 units to break even.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why do I see whole and exact units?

The exact division is useful for analysis; a business usually needs a whole unit to reach or exceed break-even.

Does this model a product mix?

No. This first version is a single-product scenario.
